Behind the Scenes: Coaching for an English-Language Feature Film

Recently, I’ve been coaching two actors of Chinese descent preparing for roles in an English-language kung fu film.

It’s easy for outside observers to assume that because of their heritage, they would naturally speak English with a specific regional accent. But their own natural English simply reflects the communities where they were raised.

The characters they’re playing, however, grew up in China.

To bring those characters to life on screen, our job isn't to slap on a generic accent. Our job is to construct an English accent that feels grounded and authentic to those specific characters—built on the real-world phonetics of how a native speaker of Mandarin (or another regional language) acquires English as a second language.

Accents are Biographies you can Hear

That nuance is what makes dialect coaching for film and stage so rewarding. It’s never about "putting on an accent" or forcing an imitation. It’s about uncovering the character's history:

• Where did they grow up?

• What languages or dialects surrounded them daily?

• When and how did they learn English?

• Who taught them?

• How extensively have they travelled or lived elsewhere?

Every single one of those life events leaves distinct, physical traces in the way a person speaks. When you approach speech work from this foundation, you move away from shallow caricatures and build speech behaviour that holds up under pressure on set.

An accent isn't generic or genetic. It’s a biography you can hear.
