Whether you're preparing for an audition, rehearsing for a production, filming on set, or developing your skills as an actor, working with a dialect coach can help you perform with greater confidence, consistency, and authenticity.

I'm Mark Byron Dallas, a Toronto-based dialect coach originally from the United Kingdom. I work with actors across Canada and around the world, helping them learn accents, analyse speech patterns, and develop the tools they need to approach dialect work with confidence.

My clients range from drama school applicants taking on their first accent to experienced professional actors preparing for film, television, theatre, voice-over, and self-tape auditions. Whatever the project, my goal is the same: to help you create an accent that feels believable, sustainable, and fully integrated into your performance.

My journey into dialect coaching didn't follow a traditional path.

I grew up in England surrounded by a wide variety of accents. My own speech was shaped by influences from Birmingham, Scotland, Essex, Bristol, London, and Suffolk. Moving between different communities made me aware of how deeply accents shape identity, perception, and belonging.

Although I never had the opportunity to formally study linguistics at university, I became fascinated by the way accents work. Over many years I immersed myself in the study of dialects, phonetics, speech patterns, and language variation. What began as curiosity eventually became a profession.

Today I am a certified Knight-Thompson Speechwork dialect coach and work with actors internationally from my base in Toronto.

My approach combines detailed phonetic analysis with practical actor-centred coaching.
I believe accents are not simply collections of sounds to be copied. They are systems. Once you understand how an accent is organised, learning it becomes far more efficient and reliable.

Dialect Coaching for Film, Television, Theatre, and Auditions

Actors are often expected to learn accents quickly and perform them under pressure.

Whether you're preparing for a self-tape, a theatre production, a film shoot, a voice-over session, or a drama school audition, dialect coaching can help you develop an accent that remains consistent throughout the performance process.

I regularly work with actors on:

  • Film and television roles

  • Theatre productions

  • Drama school auditions

  • Self-tape auditions

  • Voice-over projects

  • Accent maintenance during rehearsal periods

  • Accent acquisition for new roles

  • Speech analysis and accent research

My clients include actors at a wide range of experience levels, from emerging performers to established professionals working internationally.

The Accent DNA Method

Many actors are taught accents through imitation.

While imitation can be useful, it often leaves actors dependent on recordings, line readings, and constant repetition. When the pressure increases, the accent can begin to break down.

My Accent DNA approach focuses on understanding the underlying structure of an accent.

Rather than memorising isolated pronunciation rules, actors learn how an accent functions as a complete system. They learn to identify key speech patterns, recognise relationships between accents, and understand why speakers make the choices they do.

This analytical approach gives actors a framework they can apply to future accents as well.

The goal isn't simply to learn one accent.

The goal is to become better at learning accents.

Many of my clients discover that after understanding Accent DNA, they approach every new accent with greater confidence, efficiency, and independence.
